Inside the Publishing House

Proudly supported by Hachette Australia

This unique event will take you inside – literally inside – one of Australia’s biggest and brightest publishing houses. Through the day you will have the chance to explore the career of several leading authors, editors and publishers – gaining invaluable insight into the editorial process – to help you on the path to publication.

10:30am: Registrations & Welcome

11 – 11.45am: How to Pitch

You’ve done the hard yards and completed your manuscript, but what’s next? Before you can convince a publisher to buy your manuscript, you’ll have to get them to read it in the first place. This session brings together publishers at Hachette to discuss how they best like work pitched to them. You’ll get an insight into what they’re looking for, hear their perspectives on new work and how to best present your work.

11.45 – 12.15pm: Workshop: Pitch Perfect

Ahead of this afternoon’s pitching session, whip your pitch into shape with the help of Hachette’s Robert Watkins. What’s unique about your book? Why should publishers read it? What is the best way to structure a synopsis? This session will give you an incredible opportunity to work on your pitch with industry leaders.

12.15-12.45pm: Lunch

 12.45 – 1.45pm: The Craft of Editing with black&write!

The junior and senior editors of the black&write! program speak with the editors at Hachette about upcoming projects, their perspective on the craft and ethics of editing and how to best balance the writer/editor relationship.

1.45 – 2.30pm: Case Study: Prize to Publication

Hear from 2017 Richell Prize shortlistee Julie Keys and her editor Brigid Mullane for a unique behind the scenes look at the path to publication. They’ll trace her career, the acquisition and editorial process and timeline for delivery of manuscript.

2.30-2.45pm: Afternoon Tea

2.45 – 3.45pm: Pitch Time!

Put what you’ve learned into practice and pitch your manuscript to the Hachette team! These publishers and editors are always on the lookout for new and exciting voices, so here’s your chance to show them yours.
