After receiving a phenomenal 87 applications, EWF and State Library Victoria are thrilled to announce the inaugural Emerging Writers’ Fellowship recipient: Susie Anderson!

Susie is a writer based in Sydney. Her practice is concerned with the distances between place, people and culture, themes she explores through poetry and non-fiction. In 2016 she undertook a residency at the Banff Centre in Canada and was a Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellow in 2014. Her writing is forthcoming or has appeared in Artlink, un magazine, Runway Magazine, Rabbit Poetry Journal, Australian Book Review, Alien She, The Lifted Brow and Voiceworks.

Susie plans to spend her time at State Library Victoria searching through the archives to find imagery, articles or records about in relation to Koori culture of the Western Kulin nations: up around Gariwerd (the Grampians), including Wergaia/Wemba Wemba/Wotjabulok. She plans to write and/or record several audio pieces with artists, inviting their participation in a personal response to ‘the archive’ and what this means to young Aboriginal people.

Susie will receive a $2000 grant, flights to and from Melbourne, a golden ticket to EWF and home-stay accommodation for the duration of the fellowship. She will be attending the Emerging Writers’ Festival from 19-29 June, then spending the month of July working from the State Library.

Thank You

The Emerging Writers’ Fellowship is proudly presented by EWF and State Library Victoria. The fellowship has been made possible with the financial support of Justine Hyde, Craig Semple, Cara Sputore, Kirsten Freeman, Michael Ullmer and Maree Daffy.
