I started translating ancient Chinese poetry in 1987 as a Chinese student of British and American language and literature in one of the best teachers universities in China. My three years’ studies on Dongpo, the greatest poet of Chinese history, turned out to be just what was needed when a poet came to teach us American Literature. He was Gordon Osing, an associate professor then from Memphis State University, Tennessee. I got creative and had the idea of collective translation. He joined in with another professor Huang Haipeng, an expert in Dongpo’s poetry. Funded by the writers’ club of Memphis State University, we had two books published and presented in China’s Book Fair in Beijing. Some poems are widely quoted in art publications.
